Sangre de Cristo Mountains - January 2007 My friend Jana Ruble took these photos during a snow shoe hike into the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, east of Red River. These pristine mountain canyons are ideal places to ethically wildcraft both native plants (oregon grape, uva ursi, usnea, osha, heart leaf arnica, wild roses and raspberries) and naturalized herbs (nettles, dandelions and plantain).

“Snow Scape” This is the snowy path beside Goose Creek in Carson National Forest.	Cathy Hope Snow shoe hike in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains	“Snow Veil” The little rainbow fragment is caused by sun shining through windblown snow.
“Snow Pillows” Snow on top of rocks in the Red River	“Snow Cave” This 2-foot drift of snow has formed a snow crystal cave over a swiftly moving section of water in Goose Creek.	“Snow Crystals” Frozen ice crystals that form in the shape of tubes, at a particular combination of temperature and humidity. Each star is 1"- 2" across.
