Cathy’s Comments: This Mediterranean type true sweet basil contains a high percentage of cineol and d-linalool, which gives it a lovely penetrating just-cut-fresh-basil scent. The cineol content helps us breathe more deeply, kills various microbes, and increases cerebral blood flow. This is why basil is often used for focusing and when a mental stimulant is needed. The linalool content helps us deal with stress, and activates the parasympathetic nervous system in such a way as to facilitate digestion. Basil also helps us deal with pain and muscle cramps. So I wonder why it isn’t used more often! Yes, it is slightly irritating, which is why we always dilute in a carrier oil. This particular oil is also excellent as a flavoring: just a few drops in a tomato-based sauce, especially when fresh basil is unavailable.
